Powering the Controller via Flip Tab

Section: Basic Hardware Setup
Overview
The Hypnotik FX controller includes flip-up wire terminals (also called flip tabs) on the back of the enclosure. These accept bare-end wires and allow a secure, tool-free permanent power connection - ideal for professional and in-wall installations.
The flip tab connection is preferred over the barrel jack for permanent wiring because it provides a more reliable, vibration-resistant connection.
What You Need
- Hypnotik FX controller (DIG-ALED or X-Pro)
- 24 V DC power supply (Hypnotik HYP-FX-PS-24V-6A or approved third-party)
- Appropriately rated DC power cable (see Power Supply Usage Guide)
- Wire stripper (for bare wire end preparation)
Understanding the Flip Tab Terminal
Each flip tab terminal has two parts:
- Red flip tab - Pull up to open the terminal clamp; Press down the tab to lock the wire.
- Wire insertion hole - Insert the stripped wire here.
Two terminals are present:
- Terminal marked + - Connect the positive (+24 V) conductor
- Terminal marked − - Connect the negative (GND) conductor
Wire Preparation
- Strip approximately 8–10 mm of insulation from the end of each conductor.
- If using stranded wire, twist the strands tightly to prevent stray whiskers from causing a short.
- Optional: Fit a ferrule (bootlace crimp) to the stripped end for the most reliable connection.
Connection Steps
Step 1 - Ensure power is off
Confirm the power supply is not connected to AC power before wiring.
Step 2 - Open the flip tab for the + terminal
Open the red flip tab on the + terminal upward.
Step 3 - Insert the positive wire
While the flip tab is open, insert the positive (+) bare wire end into the hole of the + terminal.
- Push the wire in until the insulation meets the terminal face.
- Release the flip tab - it springs back and clamps the wire firmly.
Step 4 - Repeat for the negative terminal
Pull the black flip tab clamp on the − terminal, insert the negative (GND) bare wire end, and release.
Step 5 - Verify connections
Gently tug each wire to confirm it is securely held. A properly seated wire will not pull out easily.
Verify:
- + terminal has the positive conductor (typically red)
- − terminal has the negative conductor (typically black)
- No bare wire strands are exposed outside the terminal
Step 6 - Connect AC power
Connect the power supply to the wall outlet. The controller will power on.
Releasing a Wire
To remove a wire from a flip tab terminal:
- Pull the flip tab upward.
- The wire will release - pull it straight out.
Wire Gauge Recommendation
| Total LED Load | Minimum Wire Gauge |
|---|---|
| Up to 5 A (120 W) | 18 AWG (0.75 mm²) |
| Up to 6 A (144 W) | 16 AWG (1.0 mm²) |
| Up to 10 A | 14 AWG (1.5 mm²) |
